- Susan Schaeffler | Founder and Chief Executive Officer email@example.comRead BioIn 2001, Ms. Schaeffler founded KEY Academy, D.C.’s first KIPP school, after being selected as one of three inaugural KIPP Fisher Fellows, a highly competitive program endowed to train future KIPP leaders. After founding and leading KEY Academy, Schaeffler became KIPP DC’s chief executive in 2005. Under her guidance and strategic vision, KIPP DC has grown from one school in 2001 to sixteen schools currently serving over 5,200 students with plans to serve over 6,000 students. As CEO, Ms. Schaeffler oversees all school leadership and academic programming, and plays a direct role in supervising the performance of students, staff, and faculty at KIPP DC’s high-performing, college-preparatory schools. Under Ms. Schaeffler, KIPP DC has received numerous honors including the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School award and the National Title One Distinguished School award.Prior to founding KIPP DC, Susan Schaeffler spent nine years in the classroom, first as a Teach for America corps member in Baltimore, Maryland, where she earned such honors as Teacher of the Year. In addition to her teaching experience, Ms. Schaeffler spent a year in rural Ethiopia working with the International Foundation of Education and Self-Help to train 180 new teachers at the Teacher Training Institute and two summers training and evaluating new Teach for America teachers. Ms. Schaeffler brought her extensive teaching and teacher training experience to KIPP DC, rooting the network’s success in strong teacher performance and making KIPP DC the highest performing system of charter schools in the district.Ms. Schaeffler’s many honors include being named one of EnVest’s 2007 “40 under 40” and the 2008 Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine. She currently serves on the KIPP Foundation Board of Directors. Ms. Schaeffler earned a BS in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University and an MA in Instructional Systems Design from the University of Maryland.
- Allison Fansler | President and Chief Operating Officer firstname.lastname@example.orgRead BioAllison Fansler joined KIPP DC in 2006 and has since served as KIPP DC’s President and Chief Operating Officer. In this role, Ms. Fansler manages all business operations for KIPP DC, a network of 16 high-performing schools that serve students in Washington, D.C.’s educationally underserved communities. Ms. Fansler oversees all financial management, talent management, external affairs, real estate development, fundraising, human resources, and performance management strategies. During her tenure at KIPP DC, Ms. Fansler has led the strategic planning for KIPP DC’s expansion efforts from 575 students to over 6,000 students and developed the business plan for network growth, including expansion to early childhood, elementary, and high schools.Under Ms. Fansler’s leadership, KIPP DC has raised over $55 million to date in private and public fundraising, secured more than $100 million of financing, and received its first credit rating of BBB+ from Standard and Poors, making KIPP DC one of five charter schools to receive such a rating and the first to do so on an initial rating.From 2007 to 2009, Ms. Fansler successfully completed the Broad Residency, a nationwide education leadership program. In 2013, Ms. Fansler was selected for the Pahara-Aspen Education Fellowship and joined the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She currently serves on the Federal City Council.
Prior to joining KIPP DC, Ms. Fansler spent three years at the KIPP Foundation in San Francisco. Before joining the KIPP team, Ms. Fansler worked at the United States Department of Treasury as a Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff. Ms. Fansler received a BA in Spanish from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

Dane Anderson is the Vice-President of Operations and Finance at KIPP DC. In this role, Dane supports financial planning, debt management, accounting and all headquarters and school-based operations. Before coming to KIPP DC, Dane was a Teach for America corps member and taught math in Zuni, New Mexico. Most recently,Dane was a Manager at the management consulting firm Bain & Company where he specialized in organizational strategy and execution. Dane received a dual degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of North Carolina and an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business.

Bonnie Bacon was born and raised in Austin, Texas until her family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut before she started high school. She graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas with a BA in Communication. Bonnie lived in New York and worked as an editorial assistant at House & Gardenmagazine before moving to D.C. to join the Stewart R. Mott Charitable Trust (now known as the Stewart Mott Foundation). She earned her Master’s in Elementary Education with the Literacy Cooperative at George Washington University and then taught 4th grade at Brookland at Bunker Hill Education Campus with DCPS for two years. Most recently, Bonnie has been working as the administrative associate for the director of a small start-up non-profit called the National Public Education Support Fund, which sponsors a group that is creating a learning community for education reform funders interested in growing the movement through policy change.

Caitlin grew up in Maryland and obtained her BS in Human Development with a concentration in Child & Adolescent Development from Virginia Tech. After completing her degree, she worked as a preschool teacher before deciding to pursue her Masters. Caitlin then spent the next two years in Vienna, Austria where she completed her MA in Human Resource Management. She returned to the District of Columbia in January 2014 and joined a network of public charter schools as an HR Coordinator and Recruitment Specialist. Caitlin also dedicates her time to volunteering with the HR Leadership Awards of Greater Washington. She is very enthusiastic to be a part the Human Resources team at KIPP DC and continuing her work within the public charter school network!

Prior to joining the KIPP DC, Kaisha was a Community Organizing Fellow for Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE). Kaisha started her career in education as a Teach For America corps member teaching 6th grade Reading in Houston, TX. She founded a program called the Boy’s Collaborative on her campus. The Boy’s Collaborative focused on providing additional support to students who struggled with behavior and/or academics through character building, community service, and mentorship. While in the classroom, Kaisha also held the roles of Data Analysis Specialist and Grade Level Chair.

Matt Bazik joined KIPP DC in June of 2016 as a Technology Project Manager! Matt joins KIPP DC from The Philanthropy Roundtable, where he served as database manager and oversaw the organization’s donor and operations database, as well as a wide variety of technology projects. Prior to this, Matt served on The Philanthropy Roundtable’s K-12 team managing research and events on education, and taught in DCPS through a teacher training program. Sonia Bhagat joined KIPP DC in June 2014 in the role of Recruitment Manager. Sonia grew up in Dallas, Texas and moved to the Virginia/D.C. area in August 2013. Upon graduating from Southern Methodist University with a Business Administration degree, she joined Deloitte Consulting as a part of the Human Capital team. After two years in consulting, she decided that she needed to shift into a career that had more personal satisfaction, and thus, became a third grade teacher in New Haven, Connecticut through the support of Teach for America. Sonia taught for four years and became one of the highest performing teachers in the Achievement First network before relocating to the D.C. region and teaching preschool for a private organization.

Chanté Chambers joins us as our new Director of Recruitment. Chanté is a proud native Washingtonian and graduate of DCPS. A Greater Philadelphia-Camden Corps member, she taught 8th grade in Camden, NJ. Chanté earned a B.A. in English from Spelman College, and serves as the Fundraising Chair for the National Alumnae Association of Spelman, DC Metro Chapter. Up until this past April, she served as a VP of Recruitment at Teach For America, the first African American to hold this position. In addition to overseeing TFA’s partnerships with HBCUs, Chanté also oversaw the recruitment efforts/outcomes across half of the country. Knowing that educational inequity still exists and limits millions of children is what drives her to continue this very purposeful work. Chanté is excited to be joining the KIPP family because she believes in the work that KIPP does and believes most in the kids and communities KIPP works with and on behalf of.

Tom joined the KIPP DC team in September 2014 as the Managing Director of Development. He started his career as a high school Spanish teacher in Baltimore City, before joining the staff of Teach For America and moving to DC seven years ago. While at TFA, he served in a variety of roles including managing teacher recruitment in the Mid-Atlantic, planning the organization’s 20th Anniversary Summit, raising funds of the Greater New Orleans region, and overseeing the marketing and events strategy across the country. Last spring, Tom helped start a job-matching website for teachers and schools called myEDmatch and has been managing business development, marketing, and school support for the company since then.

After graduating from Elon University, he began his career working in public accounting as an auditor for CohnReznick and then Deloitte, becoming a certified public accountant along the way. Justin moved away from auditing with a job as Director of Finance at political research firm Potomac Research Group. After three years there, he was able to combine his professional skill set with a personal interest in supporting Education and opportunities for disadvantaged populations through KIPP DC.

Emily Ellis is originally from San Francisco, CA. She holds a B.S. in Biology from UCLA and moved to Washington, D.C. to join Teach For America. She then taught fifth grade science at KIPP DC KEY Academy for the past three years before joining the CTR team. Bob recently graduated from the doctorate in education leadership program (Ed.L.D.) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He completed his 10-month Ed.L.D. residency in the Cambridge Public Schools, as a member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet where he led the redesign of district systems and structures to support the ongoing improvement processes. Prior to his graduate work, Bob taught middle school science and math in the Boston Public Schools for four years and the Seattle Public Schools for five years. While in Seattle, Bob received multiple awards for teaching, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence, and was recognized for significant gains in student performance, including increasing the percentage of students meeting or exceeding state science standards from 31% in 2008 to 87% in 2012. In his last year in Seattle, Bob was a science and math coach at his school, as well as an advisor to the district’s science and math program manager. Bob has a B.S. in geological sciences from Brown University, a M.Ed. from the Boston Teacher Residency at the University of Massachusetts Boston, an Ed.L.D. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and is a National Board Certified Teacher.

Kate Finley was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended St. Joseph’s University where she obtained her undergraduate degree in education, with a focus in special education. She stayed on at St. Joe’s to obtain her Master’s degree in reading and special education. After receiving her Master’s, Kate taught third grade in Philadelphia for a year. She then moved back to Maryland where she worked as a second grade teacher for two years and a fifth and sixth grade special education teacher for one year. In an effort to find a school environment with a strong mission and a focus on hard work, Kate found KIPP DC. She worked as a fifth grade reading teacher at KIPP DC WILL Academy for two years and then went on to become the Vice Principal. As she continued to fall in love with the Shaw community and the students of WILL, Kate became the school leader of WILL for two and a half years.

Abbie moved to Washington, D.C. several years ago to join a small administrative team to found and grow the Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School. Working as Project Manager for the first two years of Inspired Teaching School’s existence, Abigail has gained broad experiences in school administration. She is very passionate and dedicated to improving the well-being of all children by advocating and promoting strategic investments in public education.

Mr. Han re-joined KIPP DC in August 2014 as the Managing Director of Data & Analytics. Ed is a native Philadelphian who earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s in education from Harvard University. He then taught high school biology in Boston before earning a law degree at New York University Law School. After several years as a lawyer, he moved to D.C. in 2007 and returned to teaching high school biology in Montgomery County Public Schools. Afterwards, he served as a special assistant to D.C. Superintendent Deborah Gist at OSSE, and in 2009 he joined KIPP DC as the director of operations. In 2012, he left to pursue a graduate degree in science education at George Washington University, joining an NSF-funded research project on STEM-focused high schools, and he earned his education specialist degree in 2016.

As a Coro Fellow, Joseph worked within six organizations ranging from businesses to non-profits to labor unions over the course of his nine-month fellowship. Prior to participating in Coro, Joseph worked on local political campaigns and spent a summer with the Orange County District Attorney’s office. He graduated from UC Los Angeles with a degree in Sociology and Public Affairs. Althea Holford joined KIPP DC in August 2016 as the Managing Director of Real Estate and Community Relations. Althea comes to KIPP DC after having served three years at the Deputy Mayor for Education’s Office (DME). She spent nearly three years at the DME as a Senior Policy Advisor. There she supervised the school facility portfolio for the District and the Master Facilities Plan. Prior to the joining the DME, she spent 6 years at the Department of General Services where she oversaw the Right of First Offer process for charter school reuse of excess District schools. Althea has long been a supporter of KIPP DC and was an advocate for many of the current KIPP DC campuses. Althea attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the George Washington University Law School. She is also a Certified Public Manager and a Six Sigma Greenbelt. Althea is a native New Yorker and an avid Giants fan.

Stephanie Kapsis is a Senior Advisor at KIPP DC. In her role, she focuses on a portfolio of projects ranging from serving as the project lead for our Race To The Top-District grant to assisting with Human Capital and External Affairs support. Before joining KIPP DC, Stephanie helped lead Teach For America’s D.C. Regional office. She held a variety of roles at Teach For America, including serving as a “teacher coach” and Managing Director of Program where she led a team that supported 200 elementary and early childhood teachers across Washington, D.C. and Prince George’s County. She later served as Senior Managing Director where she led the D.C. Region’s external partnerships with administrators, teachers, and city officials, certification and compliance strategy, management of the regional board, as well as the region’s fundraising efforts and communications strategy. Prior to working on staff with Teach For America, Stephanie taught dual language first and second grade in New York City public schools. Stephanie attended Princeton University where she received a bachelor’s degree in Politics and certificates in Spanish and Latin American Studies. She received a Master’s of Science in Teaching with a Bilingual Extension in Spanish Language from Pace University. She is originally from Northern Virginia, and now lives in Alexandria with her husband, Jim, and daughter Cora. Stephanie also serves as a member of the School Board for Alexandria City Public Schools.

Christine Kim joined KIPP DC in December 2013 as the Human Resources Associate. After graduating from Temple University in Philadelphia in January 2012, she worked at Ryder System, Inc. as a Human Resources Coordinator until her recent move to the D.C. area. Although she most recently worked within the transportation industry, she is excited to work in the world of education, especially at KIPP.

Melissa Kim most recently served as the Director of the Instructional Practice at NewSchools Venture Fund and was responsible for leading the D.C. Pilot for the D.C. Schools Fund. In her role with NewSchools, Melissa served on the board of directors for the DC International School and Paul Public Charter School. Prior to joining the NewSchools team, Melissa served as the principal of Alice Deal Middle School, the highest-performing and largest public middle school in the District of Columbia. During her seven years as principal, Melissa transitioned the school from a traditional junior high serving 700 students in grades 7-9 to a team-based middle school serving more than 1,000 students in grades 6-8. During this time, classrooms were desegregated and detracked and math standards were raised to ensure that all 8th graders entered high school with at least an Algebra or Geometry credit. She also led the successful effort by Alice Deal to become certified as the first International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program in D.C. Public Schools. She was able to lead these changes while managing a $60 million in situ modernization of the historic school facility. Melissa came to the District of Columbia as a Teach for America Corps member and taught for six years in Northeast and Southeast DC. After receiving her Masters in school leadership, she joined the inaugural cohort of NewLeaders in Washington, D.C. She has served as an assistant principal in Washington, D.C., as well as in Arlington, VA. Melissa holds a B.S. from Colby College, an M.S. from Trinity College, and an Ed.D from the University of Pennsylvania. Her dissertation focused on practices to integrate within schools to close both the academic achievement gap as well as the social engagement gap.

Stacie Kossoy was the founding principal of KIPP DC Grow Academy. Prior to starting Grow Academy in 2010, Ms. Kossoy was a founding teacher and Kindergarten Grade Level Chair at KIPP DC LEAP Academy, KIPP DC’s first early childhood school. Ms. Kossoy’s teaching experience includes Pre-K and Kindergarten literacy at LEAP Academy, where she was honored with the Board of Directors’ Award in the spring of 2008, and first grade in Camden, NJ. Ms. Kossoy is a graduate of Grinnell College, the KIPP School Leadership Institute and holds an M.A. in Education Leadership from National Louis University.

Before moving to D.C. in 2011, Ashley taught video production to high school students in Chicago at Community TV Network and then switched from students to sports as a videographer and Assistant Director of Multi-Media Marketing for the Ohio University Athletic Department. Born and raised in Ohio, she graduated from Ohio University with a major in media management and a minor in business.

Theresa joins the development team following work in the classroom and the non-profit sector. She began her engagement in the education reform movement as a Teach For America corps member in Philadelphia. Following TFA and time in non-profit development, Theresa returned to a school-based role as a lead teacher at KIPP DC. She went on to teach both elementary and middle school at KIPP DC’s Douglass Campus, including leading a founding team at Heights Academy. Theresa holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Justice & Peace Studies from Marquette University and a Master’s in Urban Education from University of Pennsylvania. Through her role as Manager of Individuals Giving, Theresa works to connect donors with meaningful opportunities to become champions of KIPP DC.

Eric then transitioned to the support of fundraising efforts for Whitby School, an independent K-8 school in Greenwich, before finding his current role at KIPP DC. In addition to his work at KIPP, Eric is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Public Administration at the Trachtenberg School at The George Washington University.

Rebecca most recently served as the Director of Teacher Development Strategy at the District of Columbia Public Schools and as the Managing Director of Academics at Scholar Academies, where she oversaw curriculum, assessments, instructional coaching and professional development. Rebecca began her career teaching second grade in Camden, New Jersey as a Teach For America corps member. She received a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was a Toll Public Interest Scholar and taught a senior level seminar on Education Law. She also holds a Bachelors of Science from Northwestern University and was a Zuckerman Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, from which she holds a Master’s in Education Policy and Management.

Prior to joining KIPP DC, Nancy worked as an independent consultant supporting school and district leaders to improve outcomes for young people. Nancy helped KIPP DC launch The Learning Center in 2015 and continues to support this work in her current role. Earlier in her career, Nancy held leadership positions in the New York City Department of Education under Schools Chancellor Joel Klein. In this work, she led the oversight of 102 charter schools. She also worked to improve the system’s graduation rate by managing the design and development of 15 new Transfer High Schools that serve students who have not been successful in traditional schools. A former New York City high school teacher, Nancy holds a Masters degree in Education from New York University and a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University. She serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Child Research Center where she also served as the Parent Association President in 2014-2015. Nancy lives in Washington, DC with her husband and their three young children.

Kevin Mehm is our Managing Director of Operations. He grew up in Herndon, VA, went to high school in Connecticut, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both undergraduate and graduate school. He began his career in TV sports production, traveling around the country and providing graphics and statistics for live sporting events. After graduate school, he worked in the computer industry doing brand management, product management, and product portfolio strategy for Lenovo. He transitioned into education through the Broad Residency program with a placement at Prince George’s County Public Schools. He was most recently responsible for improving the business and operational practices of the district’s Division of Supporting Services.

Kim Neal was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. She earned her B.A. in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University as a first generation college graduate. Upon completion, Ms. Neal began her career in education as a Teach for America in St. Louis, MO at Vashon High School. While in St. Louis, she earned a Master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University. Ms. Neal then moved to New York City where she was a School Social Worker and a Dean of Students in K-8 charter schools in Harlem. While in New York, she earned a Master’s degree in Education and School Building Leader Certification (NY) at Teachers College-Columbia University. In 2008, Ms. Neal moved to Chicago, IL to become the Founding Principal at Muchin College Prep. Ms. Neal’s passion for education and social justice has been evident throughout her career. She holds high expectations for staff and students and pushes everyone to become their best selves.

Lauren hails from northern New Jersey. She attended Columbia University where she majored in Political Science and Indiana University Maurer School of Law-Bloomington where she received her juris doctorate. Lauren has always been passionate about child advocacy and education policy. To that end, during her final semester in law school, she participated in an externship at the Children’s Defense Fund’s D.C. office, which further solidified her desire to pursue a career in these fields. She returned to D.C. after law school to become the Policy and Advocacy Associate at FOCUS, and was there for about two years. After leaving FOCUS, she clerked at the Superior Court of the District of Columbia on a domestic relations docket. Lauren is excited to join the KIPP DC family to continue supporting the charter school movement!

Jessica grew up in Arkansas and attended the historic Little Rock Central High School before heading to Boston University. She spent several years in the corporate world before officially getting into education, starting a coexistence project in Israel and then going on to earn her Master’s in Peace Education. Jessica was a 2011 TFA Corps Member in the Delta, teaching high school math. Prior to her move to D.C., she was a math teacher for Achievement First in Connecticut.

Nadel Pierre-Toussaint joined the HDQ team as our Manager of CTR Recruitment and Selection in July 2015. Nadel is a Brooklyn, NY native and Philly enthusiast. She attended Syracuse University where she received a bachelor’s degree in International Relations before joining the 2007 Teach for America – Philadelphia corps. Her experience teaching secondary math ignited her passion for educational equity and driving communities to take action on vital issues. After several years of teaching, Nadel transitioned to corporate America as a communications and outreach specialist supporting federal and local government flood awareness programs. She holds a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. Nadel also serves as a member of Teach for America’s Collective DC Board. She is thrilled to join the KIPP family and bring promising teachers to DC classrooms.

As Director of School Operations, Lorraine oversees operations across KIPP DC schools and serves as an advisor on issues ranging from operational innovation to crisis management. Prior to joining KIPP DC, Lorraine spent over a decade with Disney, first as a Regional Site Controller overseeing ESPN Zone’s East Coast locations and later, as an Assistant General Manager of a $10m Disney entertainment complex. Lorraine has a BS in Accounting and is a voracious reader of leadership and change management books. She proudly hails from the Bronx, NY, and is a foodie, dancer, and mother of a beautiful daughter.

Adam Roberts joined KIPP DC in January 2010, and is currently the Director of Innovation & Instructional Technology. The Instructional Technology team manages KIPP DC’s instructional tech strategy and provides a number of technical, logistical and PD supports to teachers and school leaders so that they can focus on implementing their plans with fidelity. Prior to this role, Adam led the Information Technology team for four years, with a focus on setting our schools up with strong infrastructure and technology support processes. Before joining KIPP DC, Adam taught middle and high school math and A.P. Computer Science at a D.C. area charter school as a Teach For America Corps Member, and served as Director of Institute Technology with Teach For America. Adam received a BS in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida and a MAT in Secondary Mathematics from American University.

After his time in the corps, Adam joined TFA’s staff working on their recruitment and marketing teams. Nate Schwartz joined KIPP DC in June 2014 and is the Director of Business Operations. Nate had previously worked with KIPP DC as an Education Pioneers Fellow during the summer of 2013. He completed his MBA at Georgetown University in May 2014. Prior to going back to business school, Nate taught middle school Spanish and worked in admissions and diversity for six years at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. Nate earned a BA in International Relations and Spanish from the University of Pennsylvania and following graduation served as a local governance consultant in Paraguay with the Peace Corps, where he spent much of his free time working in schools.

Amber Scott joined KIPP DC in July 2014 as the Manager of Professional Development and Certification for CTR. After graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, Amber relocated to join the Metro DC, Teach for America Corps. As a strong advocate for early childhood education, Amber has taught Kindergarten, 1st, and 3rd grades. She taught with a charter network in the city, but spent the majority of her teaching career with D.C. Public Schools. In the spring of 2013, Amber had the highest percentage of proficient and advanced students in both reading and math on the DC CAS in her school building. For her leadership both in and out of the classroom, Amber has served as Lead Teacher, Mentor, and Close Reading Literacy Facilitator. Amber received a Master of Education, Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University.

Most recently Robert was a consultant with Capital Partners for Education, where he developed communications and marketing strategy and social media campaigns. Robert graduated from Dickinson College where he was a student athlete, majoring in Sociology and playing NCAA football.

Kyle was born in Seattle, WA and attended the University of San Diego where he earned his BA in Accountancy. As a senior at San Diego, he was elected to be the Director of Finance for the Associated Student Body, and was later accepted to teach middle school mathematics in St. Louis through Teach For America. While teaching in St. Louis, Kyle completed his Master’s in Secondary Education at the University of Missouri – St. Louis, and after finishing his two-year commitment with TFA, he moved to Washington D.C. and taught a third year as a test-preparatory specialist within DCPS. Outside of work, Kyle is a sports fanatic, enjoys playing and producing music, paints regularly, and typically commutes on his bike.

Susan Toth is a Chief Academic Officer at KIPP DC, working primarily with KIPP DC College Preparatory High School and KIPP Through College. She was previously the Director of Secondary Academics at KIPP DC. Susan began her teaching career in Seattle Public Schools, teaching reading, writing, special education, social studies, and science. Prior to joining KIPP DC, Susan was a school leader of a diverse 900+ student high-poverty public school in the Seattle Public School system, transforming it to become one of the highest performing schools in Washington State. She believes deeply in the vision and mission of ensuring that our students are successful in getting to and through college; she believes that setting ambitious goals for student achievement, supporting great teaching and school leadership, creating joyful school experiences, and establishing supportive and strategic partnerships with students and families are key tenets in making this a reality. Susan graduated with a BA in History and English from the University of Washington, and earned her Masters Degree at Seattle University. After teaching for several years, Susan earned her educational leadership credentials from the Danforth Educational Leadership Program at the University of Washington.

Her technical career has focused on financial accounting services and operation improvement engagements. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from The University of Tampa in 2005, he became a Technical Support Engineer for a software development company called CMS GlobalSoft, Inc. in Lorton, VA. Accompanying his seven year tenure at CMS is an extensive background in technical troubleshooting, software implementation, systems integration, and last but not least, Q/A Testing and product deployment. Joining the KIPP DC family has provided Leaton with an inside opportunity to apply his technical expertise to a valiant cause and, in his own words, “take part in the growth of an educational movement that would make any Washington, DC native beyond proud.”

Nathan Woods joined KIPP DC in July 2016 as a history teacher at KIPP DC College Preparatory and is currently the community relations manager. In this role, Nathan is responsible for creating strong advocates of KIPP DC in our schools and in the communities we serve. He does this by engaging with school leaders, parents, community members, and local government officials. Nathan is from southeast Washington, D.C. and obtained a bachelor of arts in political science and child and family policy from Syracuse University. Nathan’s relationship with KIPP DC began when he was a fifth-grade student at KIPP DC’s KEY Academy. Prior to joining KIPP DC as a Team Member, Nathan worked as a seventh and eighth-grade social studies teacher in San Antonio, Texas with Teach For America. When Nathan isn’t working he can be found watching reruns of Friday Night Lights and coaching his nephew to be the next Michael Jordan or Usain Bolt.
