Former DC State Superintendent of Education will lead academic strategy and performance across KIPP DC’s 22 schools
WASHINGTON, D.C. — KIPP DC Public Schools announced today that Hanseul Kang will join the network as superintendent on December 7, 2026. The former D.C. State Superintendent of Education and executive director of The Broad Center at Yale brings more than two decades of experience in education and systems leadership.
In her new role, Kang will lead efforts to strengthen instruction, develop school leaders, and ensure educators across KIPP DC’s 22 schools have the support necessary to prepare students for success in college, career, and life. Her work will directly advance Ascend 2030: Rising Together, KIPP DC’s strategic plan to improve academic achievement and ensure every school earns a Strong or Exemplary rating on ASPIRE, D.C.’s public charter school accountability framework by 2030.
“Hanseul brings deep knowledge of D.C., extensive experience developing strong leaders, and a clear understanding of what it takes to turn ambitious goals into action,” said Shannon Hodge, chief executive officer of KIPP DC. “She listens carefully, builds trust, and keeps students at the center of her work. She will be an invaluable partner to our educators as we deliver on our commitment to Every School Excellent.”
Kang served as D.C.’s State Superintendent of Education from 2015 to 2020, leading the state education agency overseeing academics across the District’s traditional public and public charter schools.
“Hanseul is an exceptional leader with a proven track record of delivering results for Washington, D.C. students and families,” said Bisi Oyedele, Chief Executive Officer of Education Forward DC. “As State Superintendent, her leadership helped drive significant achievement gains and narrow opportunity gaps across the District. We are thrilled to see her join Shannon and the leadership team at KIPP DC.”
From 2020 to 2025, Kang served as assistant dean and inaugural executive director of The Broad Center at the Yale School of Management, preparing senior executives for public education leadership. Previously, she served as chief of staff for the Tennessee Department of Education and began her career teaching high school social studies in rural New Mexico through Teach For America.
“I’m excited to join KIPP DC and work alongside educators and families who care deeply about our students’ futures,” said Kang. “I look forward to listening to our school communities, building on what is working, and ensuring our teachers and leaders have the support they need to provide an excellent education for every student.”
