Family Spotlight – Mrs. Jenelle Stubbs-Byrd

Meet Mrs. Jenelle Stubbs-Byrd | Legacy College Preparatory

KIPP DC takes great pride in recognizing the invaluable contributions of our dedicated families in our community. This month, we have the honor of spotlighting Mrs. Jenelle Stubbs-Byrd, a proud native of Washington, D.C., and a devoted parent to her son attending Legacy College Preparatory.

Mrs. Jenelle Stubbs-Byrd currently serves as a payroll coordinator for Willis Towers Watson. As a first-year parent at our Legacy campus, she has swiftly established herself as the nurturing force behind the Legacy Bulldogs football team. While her passion for football is evident, she equally values the exceptional education provided at KIPP DC. According to Ms. Stubbs-Byrd, ”Although my son plays football, I truly admire KIPP DC’s unmatched academic focus. I’ve extensively researched educational options and witnessed the significant positive change KIPP DC brought to my niece. Despite being a football family, academics take priority for me, and I appreciate the emphasis KIPP DC places on them.”

Among the most cherished aspects of the KIPP DC experience for Mrs. Stubbs-Byrd is the bond she has formed with the faculty and her “bonus sons” on the football team. She notes “As a football mom, my main focus is supporting the boys. I found myself bridging communication between coaches and kids, lending a hand whenever needed. My involvement in football started with my son at age four, leading me to serve as team mom or admin. This continued into high school, where I sensed a need to contribute.”

Mrs. Stubbs-Byrd’s unwavering dedication is not only influenced by the support she receives from staff, but also by the impact she’s had on students. She expresses, “Seeing the boys’ happiness drives me. Recently, we celebrated their undefeated championship with donuts. Their joy in seeing me surpassed their excitement for the treats. That feeling of brightening a kid’s day inspires me to continue. It’s not just about supporting my own kids, who have extensive support, but also supporting other students who may not have those resources.”

Beyond her contributions to the KIPP DC community and her professional work, Mrs. Stubbs-Byrd finds joy in creating apparel. Beginning during COVID, she launched a successful vinyl apparel business, initially catering to five local teams and seven businesses. Eventually, she expanded to designing fan gear for Legacy’s football team and has now ventured into creating merchandise for a national team. We couldn’t be more proud to feature her as this month’s family spotlight!
