Women’s History Month – Teacher Spotlight

Alicia Pinkett – KIPP DC KEY Academy

Born and raised in Washington, DC , Alicia Pinkett began loving art from a young age. Since middle school, she used art as a means of escape. In the 7th grade, her teacher influenced so much that she wanted to make art her career. That school year, she sold her first painting, displayed a piece in the DCPS calendar, and at the Ronald Reagan airport. From that moment on, she realized that art was more than just a hobby and could be her life. Alicia maintains the philosophy that arts is life as it can be found in science, math, engineering, music, and much more. She learned that without art, many of objects that people know and love today would not exist. Her goal is to make sure that people know her artwork exists and that she never gave up on what she loves.  She desires to expand her world in an artistic manner. Last year, she won a grant to create portraits for families who lost someone to gun violence.  Alicia finds join in giving families a reason to smile and art that would last forever. Since then, she has joined ArtBAE, an art organization in DC, started an Art Elective at KIPP DC KEY Academy, and started her own business, AisforARTT LLC. Teaching the art program that she created for middle schoolers at KIPP DC KEY Academy has been the best experience of her life thus far.
