KIPP DC Welcomes New Chair of the Board of Directors

We’re thrilled to share that KIPP DC’s board of directors has elected Anthony Lewis to serve as the next chair. Tony has been an active supporter, partner, and advisor to KIPP DC for many years and has been a member of our board since 2015.

In his new role, Tony will be responsible for working with KIPP DC’s executive team to reopen schools in the aftermath of COVID, drive a set of strategic priorities to achieve our 2025 goals, and continue to evolve KIPP DC’s approach as we develop into a more impactful, innovative, and inclusive school system, that provides joyful, identity-affirming learning experiences so that all students and alumni achieve extraordinary outcomes.

Tony brings nearly 35 years of executive experience to KIPP DC. As the region vice president of public policy for Verizon Communications, he oversees the corporation’s interests and philanthropic activities in the mid-Atlantic. He has had a successful career in a wide range of positions within telecommunications management, and serves on a number of other nonprofit boards including Fight for Children, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Johns Hopkins University Cary School of Business, and the Washington Nationals Philanthropies. Tony was formerly the chair of the board of directors of the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and the DC Chamber of Commerce.

Tony is stepping into the role held by longtime board chair Terry Golden, who has steadfastly led KIPP DC in this capacity since 2008.

“We are extraordinarily grateful to Terry for his years of service and the indelible impact he has had on the lives of KIPP DC’s students, families, and staff members,” said president Allison Fansler. “Under Terry’s leadership, KIPP DC has grown from four schools to 19 schools educating more students than any other public charter school in Washington, DC. We cannot thank him enough for all he has done for our school community over the years.”

Terry will step into a board advisor position as a lifetime member of the KIPP DC team and family. Members of the KIPP DC community who would like to express their gratitude to Terry are welcome to do so here.

Tony shared some reflections about this transition and the road ahead: “I am humbled to follow a great chair and friend, Terry Golden. It was his compassion, commitment and caring that inspired me to join the teachers, parents, staff, partners and investors on this journey to improve the life outcomes of our collective treasures – our children. These difficult days do not set the agenda for the success of our students, we do. I accept this honor and stand ready to lead a board filled with talented leaders devoted to our city.”

In addition to Tony’s appointment as board chair, we are pleased to introduce the newly elected executive committee of KIPP DC’s board of directors, which includes the following officers:

  • Barry Caldwell, vice chair & school and community affairs committee interim chair
  • John Duff, treasurer & finance committee chair
  • Pamela Yee, governance committee chair
