KIPP in the Community – May 2019 Edition

This month, as a community, we really saw the fruits of our collective labor.  From the Citywide Safe Passage Convening to College Signing Day, the launch of the KIPP DC Alumni Association, and our KIPP DC College Preparatory championship team honored, it all was a harvest of the seeds planted from hard work. As an advocate, my team and I were amazed at the young people that gathered to speak directly to elected officials and to see those same officials respond with commitments to that will be implemented this fall. Finally, as a KIPP DC College Preparatory parent, I was especially proud to watch the class of 2019 declare their colleges and career choices; knowing each senior did whatever it took to get across this finish line.

Safe Passage Conveing

Safe Passage Citywide Convening

Through our partnership with the Deputy Mayor for Education’s Office, we hosted a series of Safe Passage town halls at schools across Washington, D.C that culminated with a citywide convening at KIPP DC College Preparatory on May 15.  More than 200 attendees were joined by Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn, as well as leaders from WMATA, the Metropolitan Police Department, and other community organizations to find solutions that remove one barrier towards a great education—safe travel for students to and from school.

KIPP DC Alumni Association Launch

Alumni Association Launch

With a growing alumni network, it is our goal to provide and curate a space where former students, parents, and teachers can re-connect, engage, and help grow the KIPP DC community. That’s why on May 1, we launched the first ever KIPP DC Alumni Association! We were beyond grateful to be alongside dozens of our young alumni and even some former KIPP DC teachers. Stay up to date on ways to engage with KIPP DC and alumni. Visit the Alumni corner or reach out to Nathan Woods to learn more.

4th Annual Peace RallyCommunity Bands Together at Peace Rally

On June 1, KIPP DC alongside a host of community organizations, churches, and city officials came together for the 4th annual Stop the Violence & Increase the Peace Rally. The peace rally began at KIPP DC Benning Campus in Ward 7 and ended at the Boys & Girls Clubhouse on Benning Road. For over a mile, students, families, and community members peacefully marched, chanted, and raised awareness to the issue of violence in the community. We’re grateful to be able to be part of this movement and look forward to continuing to bring the community together.
