It’s January of KIPP DC College Preparatory and Somerset College Preparatory’s class of 2020’s senior year. Our seniors have been hard at work to ensure a strong finish to the school year. But, before graduation or the search for prom outfits begins, we wanted to share an update on the accomplishments and successes of this extraordinary class through their push to college and onto careers. Read more and catch up with the Class of 2020!
January’s “Equity in Action” spotlight features the Howard University classroom at KEY Academy, led by Mr. Marcus Bailey. During our visit, students were exploring the 15 legislative acts put in place by President Franklin Roosevelt during the first 100 days of his presidency. “I’d like to think that I am very practical in my approach to teaching social studies. My kids are in charge of their learning experience whereas I am just the vessel,” he remarked on establishing a sense of belonging in his social studies classroom.
“They engage in hands on activities and bring historical events to life. It’s through these practices where they recognize that Mr. Bailey is not only here to ‘teach’ but to ‘support’ them in their thought processes. As a result trust and respect is established as well a consistent nurturing environment for learning.”
Through the Black Mentorship & Educators Network (bMEN), educators at KIPP DC are creating a support network that aims to ensure that we are retaining our male teachers of color through a mentorship program that matches Black male residents of the Capital Teaching Residency and new lead teachers with experienced Black male teachers and leaders for support, friendship and guidance. Earlier this week, Mayor Bowser announced KIPP DC has been awarded the Ferebee-Hope site in Ward 8’s Washington Highlands neighborhood to build a permanent home for our second high school! At Ferebee-Hope, we plan to build a first-of-its-kind, community campus that promotes educational excellence, wellness, and lifelong learning. This high school will be a permanent home for our Somerset College Preparatory students. Honor Academy will remain at the Wheeler Road Campus.
Along with the high school facility, KIPP DC will build a brand new recreation center to replace the existing one located at Ferebee-Hope. This facility will be operated by the Department of Parks & Recreation. Also on the site, KIPP DC will construct a community center for partner organizations to provide various community benefits, including space for Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy, Training Grounds adult education program, and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry who will provide mental health services for neighborhood residents and KIPP DC families.
You can learn more about the project, see renderings of the proposed facility, and follow the progress of the project at www.kippdc.org/ferebeehope.
Though we’re only halfway through the school year, we’re already thinking about the 2020-21 school year ahead! We are actively recruiting new students to apply to KIPP DC through the My School DC lottery. And, budget planning season is just around the corner, at which time we’ll finalize staffing structures, new programmatic investments, professional development, and staff wellness and sustainability initiatives for the 2020-21 school year. Stay tuned for more updates in future editions of KIPP in Touch.
Our team & family was proud to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King alongside our families in DC’s Annual MLK Day Parade!
