Alumni Practice Career Skills During Annual Networking Event

The KIPP Through College & Career team recently hosted their Annual Networking Event with more than 100 KIPP DC alumni and professionals in attendance! KIPP DC alumni were able to practice their networking skills with professionals from across industries, hear from guest speakers, and gain insight into future career opportunities.

“We want to make sure we equip our students with the skills to network in today’s world,” said managing director of KIPP Through College & Career Tevera Stith. “This type of thoughtful exposure offers the opportunity to connect, think about the future, get advice, and work on soft skills that can lead to great internships or future jobs.”

Classroom Spotlight

The College of New Jersey Classroom

KIPP DC Connect Academy

KIPP in Touch stopped by Connect Academy’s College of New Jersey Kindergarten Classroom led by Ms. Grace Slobodzian. During our visit, students were participating in a group writing lesson before separating and independently writing their own “How To” books. In this exercise, students think of a topic, write a list of materials, and write and draw pictures to teach readers the steps to become an expert. So far, students have explored topics such as “How to Make Cupcakes,”  “How to Be a Good Brother,” and “How to Read Sight Words.”

“I enjoy seeing how they show love by looking out for one another in little and big ways,” Ms. Slobodzian remarked when describing this special group of KIPPsters. “They show growth by working hard and learning from their mistakes. They show teamwork by helping each other solve problems, and they show joy by enthusiastically participating in content across the school day.”

Congratulations to the College of New Jersey classroom for being this month’s classroom spotlight. Check out more images for this month’s visit!

An Update on Key Strategic Priorities for KIPP DC

As we hit the 100-day mark for the 2018-19 school year, we’re excited to share a few updates about some of KIPP DC’s strategic priorities:

  • Somerset Partnership:  We have completed student transcript and attendance audits, and are working on building out an academic, special education, and extracurricular program. Current Somerset Prep staff members have submitted letters of interest in returning to the campus, so the recruitment team has begun conducting initial interviews with staff for the 2019-20 school year. We’re excited to share Somerset Prep principal Lauren Catalano will continue as the principal of the high school. Her experience and leadership will be key to providing students and families continuity at the Somerset Campus next year. And this week, we completed the final step in the formal process to move forward with our partnership by transferring the Somerset Campus facility to the KIPP DC portfolio.
  • Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion: Many schools have begun developing school-specific diversity, equity, and inclusion plans to address areas of interest for their school community. Across the network, we are exploring specific initiatives, including student and staff policies, professional development for staff, school talent pipelines, and developing an organizational equity statement and identifying opportunities for KIPP DC to take more of a leadership role in this work.
  • Planning for 2019-20: Though we’re only halfway through the school year, we’re already thinking about the 2019-20 school year ahead!  We are actively recruiting new students to apply to KIPP DC through the My School DC lottery, with the high school application deadline tomorrow and the PreK-8 deadline just a few weeks later. And, budget planning season is just around the corner, at which time we’ll finalize staffing structures, new programmatic investments, professional development, and staff wellness and sustainability initiatives for the 2019-20 school year.
