KCP Theater Soars to New “Heights” in it’s Seventh Production

The spring musical has become a tradition at KIPP DC College Preparatory over the years. After wowing audiences last year with their rendition of Hairspray, KCP Theater is raising the bar with In the Heights, the seventh KCP Theater Production. Created by three-time Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights is a story of love, hope, and faith set against the backdrop of three days in the tightly-knit Latin community of Washington Heights. Read more about KCP Theater and In the Heights.

Classroom Spotlight

PreK4 Blue Dolphins

KIPP DC LEAP Academy

KIPP in Touch visited LEAP Academy for this month’s classroom spotlight and stopped by the PreK4 Blue Dolphins room, led by Ms. Sheneka Quinitchette. During our visit, KIPPsters were participating in the Pet/Vet Unit during their Make Believe Play Block, while also transitioning to their first station of the Community Helpers Unit. Students were able to build important foundational skills by stepping into roles such as veterinarian or firefighter and creating realistic scenarios.

Ms. Quinitchette loves creating a sense of belonging in her classroom, while making the learning experience fun and exciting for her KIPPsters. “I enjoy teaching students through all the various aspects of our curriculum and school day,” she said.

“It’s also a pleasure to hear parents say their student came home and talked about what we did in class. Having teachable moments and expanding students’ thinking is my favorite part of teaching.”

Congratulations to the PreK4 Blue Dolphins!  View more photos from this month’s visit!

Updates Across the Network

Spring is finally upon us! Here are a few quick updates about changes happening around the KIPP DC network:

  • Benning Construction: For several years, we have been exploring opportunities to expand the Benning Campus so that it is comparable in size and space to our other PreK through 8th grade campuses. We’re excited to share that we are ready to move forward with this plan. Construction will begin this June. When completed, the Benning Campus will include:
      • 30,000 square feet of additional classroom, administrative, and community spacing, bring the campus to 110,000 total square feet (on par with most other KIPP DC campuses)
      • 10,000 square feet of outdoor recreation and protected play space
      • A secure, underground parking garage for staff members
      • A dedicated drop-off and pick-up lane behind the campus to improve student safety during arrival and dismissal, and alleviate traffic issues in the neighborhood
  • Somerset Campus Hiring: Our recruitment team recently wrapped up interviews with current Somerset Prep staff members who expressed interest in joining KIPP DC. We sent out offer letters to more than 30 current Somerset Prep staff members inviting them to join KIPP DC. We look forward to welcoming them to our team and family!
