100% of KCP Seniors Have Applied to College

After hosting the 7th Annual Citywide College Fair College Fair (which we covered in the September edition of KIPP in Touch), the push towards supporting seniors to and through college, and onto careers continued with a number of successful events. KCP seniors kept the momentum rolling in October and November, with highlights such as:

  • An enormous number of seniors and their families attended our October 3rd FAFSA Night, where 85 of our 123 seniors completed their FAFSA!
  • We also conducted two college tours for our students to Delaware State University & North Carolina Central University!
  • On October 25 we hosted “College Apps & Appetizers” ahead of our November 1st  Early Action deadline, which had more  than 60 seniors attend and diligently complete their college application.
  • This year, the number of students who have already submitted Early Action Applications is higher than last year. In fact, 100% of seniors have completed at least one college application and 80% have completed at least nine!

These are all huge steps for our seniors and we’re honored to help empower all of our students with he ability to lead a choice-filled life.

Classroom Spotlight

7th Grade Black Scientists Matter Classroom

AIM Academy

KIPP in Touch visited AIM Academy for this month’s classroom spotlight and stopped by the 7th Grade “Black Scientists Matter” room, led by Ms. Kia Coleman. During our visit, KIPPsters were diving into a new unit on chemical interactions by trying to determine an “Unsolved Mystery Mixture.” Students mixed different substances and tested their predictions. They were thrilled to get hands on with the material and create a few chemical reactions of their own!

Ms. Coleman believes what makes her 7th grade science class unique is their drive. “I’ve never seen a group young scholars so passionate about academics. This group amazes me at their willingness to dig deep and prove to themselves that they are the greatest, no matter what anyone says.”

Congratulations to the 7th grade “Black Scientists Matter” classroom! Check out more images from this month’s visit!

Promise Academy Named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School

Last month, Promise Academy was named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education for their commitment to academic excellence. KIPP DC Promise Academy is one of only three schools in the District of Columbia to receive this distinction.

The National Blue Ribbon School award honors public and private schools where students achieve at high levels. Since 1982, more than 8,000 of America’s schools have received this prestigious award.

Principal Erin Huseby shared, “There is not a team or a group of students more deserving of this award.  Each and every student who walks through our doors feels special, challenged, cared for, and happy. Our staff’s hard work year after year has resulted in incredible achievements for our kids. I am so proud that Promise is not only one of the best schools in Washington D.C., but one of the best schools in the country.”

Since 2003, 14 KIPP schools nationwide have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools, including KEY Academy in 2007.
