Staff Spotlight: Alexis Lane

Alexis Lane | Assistant Teacher | KIPP DC Pride Academy

We are thrilled to feature Ms. Alexis Lane as KIPP DC’s January Staff Spotlight! A native of Washington, D.C., Ms. Lane embarked on her educational journey with a determination to create a positive impact on the lives of young learners. Fueled by an enduring passion to be a part of a child’s transformative journey, Ms. Lane’s commitment to early childhood education is both heartening and impactful. With plans on pursuing an associate’s degree in early childhood education, Ms. Lane is on a dedicated mission to contribute to the growth and development of our students. We recently had the pleasure of connecting with Ms. Lane to delve into her remarkable journey at KIPP DC.

What do you love the most about KIPP DC students?

“What I love about our students is the love and gratitude they express. It’s incredible. I feel like these kids are my siblings. I appreciate their honesty because they really tell you how they feel. Their openness allows me to adapt and create an environment where they feel comfortable holding me accountable. My role goes beyond teaching. It’s about guiding them through life with care and honesty.”

How do you foster a sense of belonging within your classroom setting?

“I make an effort to connect with every student, engaging even the quieter ones in conversations. Initiating discussions, like asking about their experiences with their family and even what they did for their snow day, helps build a comfortable atmosphere. Creating that open space allows them to feel heard and understood.”

How would you describe your personal and professional growth throughout your time at KIPP DC?

“My journey at KIPP DC has brought a heightened awareness of the challenges students face. Having been on the opposite side of the classroom, I can empathize with their frustrations. While they’re dealing with their emotions and learning curves, I’ve learned to play on both sides of the table. It’s not just about teaching, but understanding their perspective.“

If you could take your students on a dream field trip anywhere in the world, where would you choose, and why?

“We actually had a game in one of my classes where we voted on this topic. The unanimous choice from a class survey was Disney World, and I’m completely on board. I see myself as a big kid, and sharing the joy of Disney with them would be amazing. I would love the idea of exploring a new place together and creating those lasting memories.”

We are immensely proud to feature Ms. Alexis Lane as the January Staff Spotlight. Her journey is a testament to the dedication and passion that defines our exceptional educators. We look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success she brings to our students at KIPP DC.
