Staff Spotlight: Chavonna Brooks

Chavonna Brooks | Homeroom Teacher | KIPP DC KEY Academy

We are delighted to showcase Ms. Chavonna Brooks as KIPP DC’s October Staff Spotlight! As a dedicated homeroom teacher at KIPP DC KEY Academy, Ms. Brooks brings her passion for education to life. Hailing from New York City, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and initially aspired to venture into the medical field. Upon graduating, she embarked on a unique path, working as a lab technician, which introduced her to the challenges students face in math education. This eye-opening experience prompted her to pursue a master’s degree in childhood and special education at Fordham University. We recently had the opportunity to connect with Ms. Brooks to explore her inspiring journey at KIPP DC.

What led you to join KIPP DC?

“What drew me to KIPP DC was its status as a nationwide network. I believe in the power of collaboration in the teaching profession. Within such a large network, there are abundant resources, and it’s about finding those resources and not reinventing the wheel. Despite being in education for several years, I still approach each year as if I’m a new teacher. KIPP DC’s collaborative environment was a significant attraction for me.”

How do you establish trust and a sense of belonging within your classroom?

“To foster trust and belonging in my classroom, I begin by opening up and letting my students get to know me as a person. Trust is the foundation for forming strong relationships. I ensure that my classroom is a safe space where students feel comfortable. Additionally, I give students specific responsibilities tailored to their personalities. For example, we recently did a class chant, and I observed as two co-captains, chosen based on their personalities, took the lead. They taught the entire class, and it was a great exercise in teamwork.”

If you could take your students on any field trip in the world, where would you take them and why?

“Personally, I would take my students to New York City. I was born and raised in the Bronx and I believe that New York is a unique experience that exposes students to a variety of rich cultures. Many of my students may not fully realize how close they are to this vibrant city. Furthermore, I’d love to show them where I grew up, and it would be an excellent opportunity to explore the birthplace of hip-hop and its cultural significance.”

Ms. Brooks is an extraordinary educator whose impact within our school community is nothing short of remarkable. We are immensely proud to feature her as this month’s Staff Spotlight, and we eagerly look forward to the ongoing positive influence she will undoubtedly bring to our students’ educational paths.
