KIPP DC Hosts 7th Annual Citywide College Fair

More than 300 students attended the 7th Annual Citywide College Fair held at KIPP DC College Preparatory on Saturday, September 22. Families had the opportunity to meet admission counselors, financial aid officers, and attend a college-readiness session to gain more information about the college admission process.

There were 64 colleges and organizations represented last Saturday and we want to send congratulations to the KCP and KIPP Through College & Career teams, as well as all volunteers and staff who were on hand to make this event a success.

Making an informed decision and choosing the right college is one of the most important decisions our families will make and we’re honored to have had the opportunity to put on this event for our community. We look forward next year’s college fair and the success of our students through college and onto successful careers.

Classroom Spotlight

PreK4 Howard University Bison

ARTS & TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY

KIPP in Touch visited Arts & Technology Academy for this month’s classroom spotlight and stopped by the PreK4 Howard University Bison room, led by Ms. Trinika McClain. During our visit, KIPPsters were enjoying their time learning about the home environment and interacting with each other through various roles of home life.

Ms. McClain has been an educator for more than 15 years and says what makes this class special is their “unique personalities, learning styles, and how they interact with each other.”

Congratulations to the PreK4 Howard University Bison! You can find more images from this month’s visit here.

KIPP DC and Nationals Youth Baseball Academy Hit a Home Run With Partnership

We’re proud to highlight our ongoing partnership with the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy (YBA) and the opportunities it has provided to our students and teachers, including:

  • Several of our schools sent students to YBA’s summer and after-school programs and Heights Academy was selected to be a Grand Slam School.  The partnership allows teachers to attend STEM education training sessions, field trips for students to visit the Youth Baseball Academy, mascot visits, student and teacher of the month recognition, and an opportunity to partake in the Nationals STEM Showcase.
  • Two Capital Teaching Residents, Aneshia McIntyre and Artis Rutledge, are splitting their time between Discover Academy and Promise Academy and the Youth Baseball Academy. These two Residents are current YBA after-school program team members who will spend half of their time in KIPP DC physical education classrooms with master teachers and in the CTR program learning how to be excellent teachers and coaches.
  • Several KIPPsters were members of the Mamie Johnson Little League team and we’re extremely proud of Jayden and Kenyatta of Northeast Academy for helping their team make it all the way to the Little League World Series!

The KIPP in Touch Podcast: Melissa Wade on Mental Health

One of KIPP DC's 2020 priorities is GET BETTER, which we're highlighting in this month's edition of the "KIPP in Touch Podcast." We were joined by Melissa Wade, director of mental health, for a discussion on her role and the evolution of KIPP DC’s approach to mental health.
